Police Probe Alleged Match Manipulation in Mosta vs Naxxar Clash

The Malta Police Force has opened an investigation into allegations of possible match manipulation involving the Malta Premier League match between Mosta FC and Naxxar Lions, played on February 4. The story was first reported by the Times of Malta, which confirmed that authorities began probing the case after receiving a formal report.
Naxxar Lions won the match known as the Derby of the North with a convincing 5–0 scoreline, a result that significantly boosted their chances of staying in the Premier League. Police have not released further details, citing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
According to information obtained by the Times of Malta, investigators are examining claims that Mosta FC players were approached before the match, allegedly by a football intermediary involved in bringing foreign players to Maltese clubs. Players reportedly showed club officials messages they said they had received prior to the fixture, prompting Mosta to escalate the matter to the police.
The Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport declined to comment due to the sensitivity of the case.
This marks the first match‑fixing investigation of the current Premier League season, casting a shadow over Maltese football as authorities work to establish the facts.
