Malta is set to make history in January 2026 by hosting the inaugural VisitMalta Women Club Trophy, a top-tier women’s football tournament featuring four elite European clubs. The event will take place on January 11 and 14 at the National Stadium, marking a significant milestone in Malta’s growing reputation as a sports tourism destination.

Two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winners VfL Wolfsburg headline the competition, joined by fellow German side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Dutch giants PSV Vrouwen, and Switzerland’s FC Basel. Alongside the tournament, the teams will hold winter training camps in Malta, reinforcing the island’s appeal for professional pre-season preparations.

Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, emphasized the strategic importance of this event: “Hosting four elite women’s football clubs highlights Malta’s commitment to sports tourism and showcases our world-class facilities and hospitality.” The initiative is supported by the Malta Football Association and Qmedia Limited, with plans to make the VisitMalta Women Club Trophy an annual fixture.

The tournament builds on Malta’s successful track record of hosting international women’s football events, including training camps for Manchester United Women and PSV Vrouwen. Organizers expect more than 50 football teams, professional and amateur, to visit Malta in the first four months of 2026, generating significant economic benefits for tourism and hospitality sectors.

With women’s football enjoying unprecedented global growth, Malta’s proactive approach positions the country as a prime destination for high-caliber sporting events. Fans can look forward to world-class action and an unforgettable celebration of women’s football this January.
