Malta Rugby Union meets Prime Minister Ahead of Crucial Promotion Play-Off

Malta’s preparations for a landmark moment in its rugby history received an important boost this week as the Malta Rugby Football Union was welcomed at Castille by Prime Minister Robert Abela ahead of the upcoming Rugby Europe promotion play‑off against Austria.
During the visit, the MRFU presented the Prime Minister with a commemorative national team kit, symbolising both gratitude and the significance of the fixture. The match offers Malta a chance to secure promotion to the Rugby Europe Troph a major step in the national team’s long‑term ambitions, including its pathway toward potential Rugby World Cup 2031 qualification.
Talks also focused on the sport’s future in Malta, from strengthening the senior national programme to expanding grassroots participation and elevating the sport’s profile locally and abroad. The Union expressed appreciation for the government’s ongoing support, extending thanks to the Head of Secretariat Colonel Dr Mark Mallia, the Ministry for Education, Sports, Youths, Research and Innovation, and SportMalta for their role in organising the fixture.
As Malta prepares for one of its most important rugby matches to date, the MRFU reaffirmed its commitment to building momentum and representing the nation with pride on the international stage.
