Ivan Nagaev Cleared to Represent Malta at European Championship Finals

Ivan Nagaev is set to become the newest addition to Malta’s national waterpolo team after the Russian‑born attacker was officially granted Maltese citizenship, paving the way for his participation in next month’s European Championship finals in Serbia.
Nagaev, a prolific goalscorer well known in the local waterpolo scene, has spent several years competing in the Maltese leagues, representing both Marsaxlokk and Valletta. His strong performances and long‑term commitment to the domestic game prompted Valletta ASC to initiate the process for him to obtain a Maltese passport. However, the application stalled for over a year and a half, with little progress reported and the process appearing to be at a standstill.
In recent weeks, the situation shifted decisively. The application gained momentum, and confirmation arrived on Friday that Nagaev had been approved for Maltese citizenship. This development immediately triggered action from the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, which contacted World Aquatics to finalise the necessary registration procedures for the player’s change of sporting nationality.
By Friday night, World Aquatics had officially approved the ASA’s request, confirming that Nagaev is now eligible to represent Malta at the upcoming European Championship finals. The timing could not be better for national team coach Milan Cirovic, who gains an experienced and highly effective attacking option ahead of a major international tournament.
Nagaev is already in Malta and attended his first training session with the national squad on Friday evening. He may even feature in next week’s friendly matches against Portugal, fixtures that form part of Malta’s final preparations before heading to Serbia.
His inclusion marks a significant boost for the national team, adding depth, experience, and firepower as Malta aims to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
