PM Robert Abela Bids Emotional Farewell to Toni

Prime Minister Robert Abela has paid tribute to Toni, the elderly man he met last November following an emotional encounter with Toni’s granddaughter during her graduation, after learning of his passing while on his way to a meeting with Pope Francis in Rome.

In a Facebook post shared earlier today, Abela revealed that he received the news while travelling to the Vatican. He recalled that he had come to know Toni through his granddaughter, whom Toni had lived long enough to see graduate, a moment that had deeply moved both the family and the Prime Minister at the time.

Abela also reflected on his visit to Toni a few weeks ago at San Vincent de Paul Residence, where Toni was receiving end-of-life care after battling leukemia. Despite his deteriorating health, the Prime Minister said he was struck by Toni’s determined, courageous and cheerful spirit, noting that these qualities remained evident until the very end.

The Prime Minister highlighted the strong support Toni received from his family throughout his final days, as well as the care he was given at the residence. Toni’s condition and story had previously drawn public attention after Abela personally visited him at San Vincent de Paul, fulfilling a promise he made to Toni’s granddaughter during graduation celebrations.

Abela concluded his message by offering his sincere condolences to Toni’s loved ones, saying that he now rests in peace and will continue to watch over his family.

Condolences to Toni's family.
