The Maltese Government has submitted an application for financial assistance from the European Union Solidarity Fund following significant damage caused by Storm Harry.

The storm brought strong winds and heavy seas, leading to widespread disruption across Malta and Gozo. Public infrastructure, coastal areas, agricultural land and essential services were all affected.

Emergency response teams, including the Civil Protection Department, were deployed to deal with numerous incidents during and after the storm.

The application includes a detailed and verified report outlining damage across various sectors. It was prepared through coordination between government ministries, public entities and private stakeholders, ensuring that losses were properly identified and recorded in line with EU requirements.

Government estimates place the total damage at around €128 million. Under the fund’s criteria, Malta must exceed a minimum threshold of €121 million to qualify for assistance.

The application will now be assessed by the European Commission, which will determine eligibility and the level of support that may be granted.

The report highlights the scale of the storm’s impact and demonstrates a coordinated national response. It also reflects compliance with the rules governing the fund, which is designed to support member states following major natural disasters.

Commenting on the submission, Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said the application represents an important step in securing EU support and reflects cooperation between the public and private sectors. The Commission will now begin its evaluation process before reaching a final decision.
